The origins of this beautifully sticky, sweet dessert are thought to date back to the kitchens of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. This is probably Istanbul’s most famous baklava eaterie. They used a special variety of clarified butter to make the pastry extra delicate which they also sell so you can have a go at making your own baklava at home.

Originating in the city of Gaziantep, the current branch located in the Karakoy district of Istanbul has been there since 1949. They are famed for their wide variety of flavours which even includes pistachio flavoured pastry and chocolate baklava.

The best thing about Hamdi is that it also happens to be one of Istanbul’s best kebab restaurants too. Situated in the Eminönü district, they serve 17 different types of kebab and, of course, have a baklava dessert called gelin bohcası to finish.
